Notes from Leaders of Men

Historical Recording that captures Joy Division (then called Warsaw ) just at their 11th Gig! 
This release features 3 Unreleased Songs that most have fans have heard about in books & interviews 
Finally this Raw Recording sourced from Original Tape gets vinyl release! 

"This gig was very important to them. Gigs were hard to come by. They'd been asked and booked by Bob Last (who later did the Earcom Sampler and Fast Records). Can't remember how. I'm getting old. The band drove up in Steve's car and a hire van, I think. Middlesbrough had a fearsome reputation from the football--- proper nutters! They were bricking it! It was deserted round the gig. Sunday afternoon? There's no shops, pubs or anything! Someone turned up, let them in, they set up, sound checked, and it was good. They had a few beers and relaxed a little, chippy tea, quite civilised for them.

In the evening, people started to arrive, lot's of skinheads. The band seemed scared. By the time it came for them to go on, there were about 200 of the bastards, I remember. The DJ put Adam and the Ants on just before they went on---Dirk Wears White Sox---and they went mad pogoing and throwing beer, fighting. 


Then WARSAW went on. They were terrified, but played well, with lots of shouting on stage. Ian was great, screaming his head off. The crowd wasn't friendly. Lots of beer pots were thrown, mostly at Hooky and they kept bouncing off his head. Ha ha!Before you know it, it's over... 


The lads seemed okay, apart from Hooky, who's seething. Moaning about the skins, he stomps into the dressing room, which is a weird l-shape. Bernard was at the door to the room when Bob turned up holding a young skinhead by the ear, like a bleedin' schoolteacher. He said to Bernard, "This is the kid who was throwing the pots at Hooky. I brought him to apologise." 


Bernard says, "Let him go, it's alright!" So Bob does and I go and tell Hooky. He goes mad at Bernard, and they are fucking screaming at each other. First time I ever saw them fight. Hooky goes after Bob, looking for the skin. Don't know what happened. 


A bit later Bob came back and asked if anyone wanted a tape of the gig. No one said anything, then Hooky goes, "I'll have it."

Dear visitors

Regarding the "Leaders of Men" bootleg - I suspected when posting it that Peter Hook's whoever would soon be on to it, and not entirely surprisingly it had indeed disappeared when I logged on in the early hours.

In my listing of postings it was still there, now in "draft" form, and reactivating it unexpectedly brought it back to its rightful place on the front page.

So it is back......for the moment.

It might be worth downloading it sooner rather than later...

Such a shame that the various record company flunkies looking after Peter Hook's interests do not open a line of communication. Hardly seems to be in the spirit of the Factory record company anarchy...

Question

Dear visitors

Somebody has posted a request about the sound quality of the posted Osaka concert from New Order.

I wonder if one of those who have downloaded it would mind providing an answer? (I have only limited access ti material at present due to moving house).

For the bigger concerts (FLAC), would it be a good idea if I make a sample available so people can then decide if they want it or not? Funny that such an idea takes three years to come to mind...

Sadly, most of my music from Yugoslavia was still waiting to be transferred when the disc breathed its last...
Oh well, that will be something to do in the long autumn and winter evenings, find all of it again out there in cyberspace...

Dear visitors

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer and saw at least some good weather.

Or, if you live south of the equator, I hope the winter has not been too cold...and that spring will be soon arriving.

Regrettably, the hard disc with all my music on it is in its death throes. I am presently transferring the data - at incredibly slow speed - to alternative storage media.

I hope to be able to post some more music some time into next week...

Many thanks to all who mailed or posted information about the 1977 concert from Middlesbrough. "Here today - gone tomorrow", as they say. Sadly, I belong to those who missed the boat, so to speak, so I cannot help.

How ironic though, that for a man from Factory Records, the best label we ever had, Peter Hook's interests are now handled by a record company exec.

"Carrot and Stick", goes the saying - the threatened "further action" in the case of the Jane's Addiction Blog being the latter. But as for the former, the "carrot"? A date perhaps when these concerts, including the Ajanta and Lyceum concerts, the rare She's Lost Control video, might be released? "At some point in the future", was all I got. But one should be grateful for that.

Such are the music industry power games: big labels, with bigshot lawyers to keep the fans in their place. Such a far cry from Factory Records.

"Life is for living", as a certain Peter Hook once said, a wise statement and valuable innoculation against the unhealthy "Ian worshipping" from so many sources (he "died for us", as a foolish journalist is said to have once written).

Maybe "music is for listening to"? If a band, maybe Coldplay or similar, could make a studio album available as a "pay us what you think it's worth" download, why not then a 30-year-old concert?

Last posting for this summer, finally sourced the lossless version of this great concert, from the world's greatest band... Shame about the distortion, but if you can blend it out, New Dawn Fades and I Remember Nothing shine through. True gems.

The Human League rolled into town recently, and watched one of the songs from Dare, my first album, on You Tube. Sounded terribly dated.
This is a much earlier Human League, back in 1978. Sound quality rough, but cool songs mostly from Reproduction.
